17. Traditional Slovak Christmas | Blogmas 2015
We all know Christmas is not only about makeup, fashion and decorations. Therefore I also wanted to write something a little more personal.
In my country, Slovakia, Christmas is celebrated on the 24th of December. We have our dinner and open the presents right afterwards.
When it comes to food, we usually start with cabbage soup, lentil soup or pea soup. Then we have our main dish, which is usually some kind of fish (originally cape) with potato salad. The fish is heated, however the salad is cold. For dessert we have either the festive cookies like gingerbread cookies, wine cookies or others. And people also like to eat a kind of thin and crisp waffles with honey on top.
Some of the traditions are also throwing walnuts into corners of the dining room and wishing for something. Also eating garlic, however every family has its own traditions.
So after the dinner when we are all stuffed, we open presents. It's usually the kids who open them, because they get excited the most. And after that we just tend to watch some Christmas films, or have a little chat.
In terms of decorations, it's not much different to other countries. Some people also like to go to church at midnight on the 24th. But my family has never done that as far as I remember, we are not that religious.
Let me know about your country and how you celebrate the holidays! I would love to know.
Love,
Bonnie.xoxo
